The Portuguese Podengo Pequeño, also sometimes called the Small Portuguese Hound, the Small Portuguese Rabbit Dog, the Small Portuguese Warren Hound, the Podengo Pequeno or the Podengo Portuguesa Pequeno, is the smallest of the three Portuguese Podengo dogs. Podengos traveled from Asia Minor to the Iberian Peninsula with Russians and Phoenicians thousands of years ago and became established in Portugal where they were included on ocean expeditions to keep shipboard vermin populations under control. Portuguese Podengos come in three sizes: Grande, Medio and Pequeno. The Podengo Pequeno is considered to be a separate breed by some purebred dog registries, including the American Kennel Club. These are happy, hardy, smart dogs with a keen fondness for the active outdoor life. The smallest of all hunting breeds they are terrific rabbit and rodent hunters and enjoy hunting in small packs. They have an acute sense of smell, sharp vision and exceptional hearing. Podengo Pequenos thrive in the company of other dogs of all sorts and sizes. Courageous, cooperative, congenial, lively, tough and tenacious, this independent little dog comes in both wire-haired and smooth coat types. They are easy to train and make exceptional companions and can be reliable watch dogs.
