What is the best way to train recall in your dog?

I have a Hungarian wirehaired vizsla, and all the documentation and forums seem to suggest that this breed only responds to positive reinforcement and that sanctions for unwanted behaviour just won't work. But if your dog disappears to chase snipe in the middle of a field and you need to get to work, for example, how can you use positive reinforcement? Would love to hear what works for others.

Use a harness with a long line to walk your dog on during training. Let them move away from you before using your recall cue, if they ignore you very gently guide them back to you with the long line and reward them once they are with you. This will prevent your dog getting rewarded by the environment for ignoring you!
