Sudden death of Kitten
Background info:Living in the house - Indoor and outdoor spay and neutered cats with a neutered dog.Mother healthy, no problems birthing and attentive. 4 week old kittens are active with no signs of illness still nourished solely by mothers milk. Last night - 10pm "Gorgo" one of the kittens was going to sleep and started meowing. Not seeming to need anything and just having been fed by mama we all went to bed. 4 am I awoke hearing a kitten's loud cry. It was so loud I thought it had made it all the way to my room. I found her lying on her blanket, and it seemed like she was crying out in her sleep. "nightmare?" After going back to bed, the sound of her cry rang in my head (it was not a normal meow) and I got back up to double check her. She was gasping for air and died in my hands in minutes. My first thoughts: Dog had been put out for the night. Our neutered male cat had caused her injury. But after close examination I saw no signs of puncture wounds or wet fur. Second thoughts: Mama kitty has been fierce about any cats coming down the hall let alone in the same room and she was not alert when I went into the room. Perhaps their was something causing colic or an obstruction in the bowels? This is a mystery and was hoping we could all narrow it down a bit. My 9 yr old daughter wants to be a vet and is needing answers. My question is - What are the likely causes of death?
