Hello Ellie I just read your post and this article may help, I am a dog trainer and groomer by trade. Please read a save the vet bills - Thanks \Robert DunnAnal GlandsThe anal glands are two scent sacs located inside the dog’sanus. There’s some controversy about whether it’s a groomer’sjob to express anal sacs. Some think it’s a veterinary procedure, whereas others seem to think it’s a groomer’s job. Therefore, we’ll discuss this procedure here so that you understandit. However, it’s up to you to find out whether this is astandard procedure in the grooming salon where you work. The anal glands are located just inside the anus at around4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions. These glands become filledwith a fluid that has a very pungent odor. If the sacs aren’texpressed and the fluid emptied by either the dog when itdefecates or by the groomer during grooming, they can becomefilled and rupture, which is very painful to the dog and canrequire surgery to correct. So, no matter how unpleasant thisis for you and the dog, it’s beneficial to the pet in the long run. It’s best to express the anal glands while the pet is in the tub,so you can immediately wash the secretion away and avoid orreduce the unpleasant odor. First, ask an assistant to hold theanimal’s head. With one hand, grab the base of the tail andpull up. This action will move the anal sacs toward the openingof the anus. Using your opposite hand, place yourforefinger and thumb at either side of the anus, at approximately4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions. Push in slightly to getbehind the sacks, which will feel like grapes under the skin. Then, squeeze until all of the fluid is emptied out. (You mayfind that the job requires more pressure than you thought!)The secretion consistency will range from watery to toothpastelike. The color will likely be a shade of brown; a yellow or greencolor may indicate a medical problem. If the fluid is discolored, instruct the owner to contact the veterinarian. Finally, washthe rump and the area around the anus thoroughly.Again, although this isn’t a pleasant thing to do, it’s beneficialto the pet in the long run.
