My boxer was lethargic a few days ago, looked almost depressed, head hung low and hid under the table (Not typical behavior). The next day, he started bumping into the walls and furniture and had a seizure lasting about 1 minute. He looked like he lost equibrium and didn't have control of his limbs for a few hours afterwards. We took him to the vet who gave him a shot of something, took blood and gave us Phenabarbitol.
The blood test came back showing he has elevated white blood cellsm indicating an infection of some sort and they prescribed antibiotics. Aparently everything else they tested for was normal..
My issue is - the vet didn't examine my dog, didn't check his temperature, check his ears for an infection (I'm thinking loss of balance may indicate an inner ear issue) - nothing. Just doped him up and says he "probably" has epilepy. I have read that a high fever can cause seizures. My dog has been on the antibiotics for a day or so now and is looking much better, regained his balance and is acting fine.
I really don't want to keep him doped up on drugs he may not really need and suspect the vet is maybe just trying to get a little extra $$ treating him, but I can't really be sure. I am thinking about discontinuing the phenabaratol and see what happens, had anyone had experience with this type of thing?
