What message is my cat giving me?
Hi - I'm new and hoping someone can help me with this problem. I have three cats - 2 are siblings, a male and a female, about 5 yrs. old, the other is a Siamese, about 12. All three are active and in good health. One of them, probably one of the younger cats, has been defecating and urinating just outside the litter boxes for about a month, usually in the same spot. We have three litter boxes in the basement and they are easily reached. I eliminated the Siamese being the culprit by isolating him for a couple of days. This behavior has never happened before, and, as far as I know, nothing has changed in our environment or situation.

it could be a matter of your cat not wanting to use the litter tray that he see's as belonging to your other cats depending on who is top kitty in your household.or does he not like the litter, one of my cats behaves like this whenever i change her kitty litter while another will only go in a earth filled tray
Its funny how behaviors can change from time to time. Have you tried putting a fourth litter box on the ground? Maybe your kitty would like her own?
true, may cats copy the territorial ways of their larger cousins. all very territorial animals. being that she shares a litter box may make her feel as if she has no territory. even if the other cats are taking this circumstrance just fine they may be more intune with the litter box sharing, or peraps grown on it. but this cat in particularmay not feel very kindly to this.
please do try getting an extra litter box, or change the scent, cats with sensitive smell can detect other scents maybe the other cats arent aware of. or if not try letting the cat outside to mark his territory, he may feel that thee isnt enough terrritory for him.
