Crate training problem

We have a new 1 1/2-year-old Shih-Tzu mix who has a wonderful temperament and responsive to training.  But even with rewards training to get him to like and use his crate like a den, he doesn't like it at night with door closed and yelps constantly.

He feels imprisoned.  Is this because he is an adult dog and did not grow up with crate training from puppy stage?   We had success with our prior pups and crate training, but this does not seem to be working.  Any advice???

Have you ever read the crate trining book written by monks?

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Raising-Puppy-Monks-Skete/dp/0316578398/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252446464&sr=8-2

It really comes highly recomended for training dogs.  Might be something for you to check out

I remember when I had to crate train my dog. It sounded like he would scream bloody murder when he was locked in the crate over night :)

One thing that may help is to place the crate in the same room where you sleep.  This seemed to work with my boy!

Yes, I have, but it has been years. I will get it from the library and re-read.  Also have a book on positive dog training. And we have found a source for positive reinforcement dog trainer with classes.

Thank you so much.  We did have crate in the room but dog could not see us well.

I looked at this website prior email responses from the vet, and we did realize that the problem was "separation anxiety".  We will ask our trainer and vet this week how to best handle.  For now, we have cordoned off a part of the bedroom with plastic undermatting and a sheet (for possible accidents), and he was fine.  We all slept 8 hours!  Will return to crate training when we can get him more comfortable. TNX.

What has worked for me several times is to throw a blanket over the kennel this makes the dog feel secure also putting a stuff animal in with him so he doesnt feel alone he is still a pup and misses closeness of his siblings thebestdogtips.com
