Bearded Collie Skin Problems
I just joined and it appears to be a very cool place for all kinds of animal lovers. So I'll start out with a question.
Our wonderful bearded collie Murphy has one main issues beside getting ear infection easily and that is scally, crusty skin bumps almost like scabs. Some are little bumps like the size of small warts on a human. They don't bleed, I guess, unless you pick at them which I'm afraid to do.
I have not asked the Vet about them yet but was curious is anyone with a Beardie or similar dog has experienced the same and if so what did you do about it. Murphy's 7 years old +/- (adopted from local Operation Kindness Shelter), knee high and weighs 38 lbs and has not had this skin problem until fairly recently. Before we spend a lot of money at the vet, I was hoping for some insight.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Sorry to hear about your dogs skin problems. When I lived in AZ my lab would go into the pool a lot, and as a result he started getting ear infections. Anyway, due to the ear infection he would scratch at his ears and little bumps/scabs would form. When I took him to the vet they gave me this solution to help dry out his ear after he went swimming. I used the solution and it helped prevent his ears from getting infected and the bumps went away.
If the bumps are a result of Murphy scratching, then it sounds like you might want to try and find out what is causing the ear infection. Regular cleaning and keeping the ears dry is what helped my boy. Hope this helps!

Thanks Hoosier. We have drying fluid and a milky antibiotic medicine to put in his ears. If we catch it early it works fine. He usually gets the ear problems after he gets groomed (bathed). Although he's a Beardie, we keep him short. It's hot in north Texas and his long hair would be constant maintenance for us. We let his hair grow longer in the winter months.
The skin issues are not realted to the ear issues, I don't think. He doesn't scratch them (the skin blemishes) so I don't think they bother him. Anyone else have any ideas or experience with these types of scally things and bumps on the skin?
