Featured Large Dog - Newfoundland
Introduction
The Newfoundland, also known as the Newf and the Newfie, is a breed of dog in the Working Group. This giant of a dog has a dignified and calm disposition, and they are very devoted and loyal family companions. The Newfoundland was recognized by the AKC in 1886 and AKC approved in 1990.
The average Newfoundland stands 26 to 28 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. Their coat needs regular brushing and grooming, and their eyes and mouth should be cleaned daily as well.
Temperament
This breed has a mistaken reputation for being not very bright, but they are actually very intelligent dogs. Their large body size contributes to their slow and almost seemingly lazy disposition, but the Newfoundland is an extremely smart dog able to discern the slightest of emotions from humans and other animals alike. The great Newfoundland needs plenty of socialization and training to allow their genial personality to flourish, and to ensure that they can be handled in any type of situation.
The Newfoundland is an excellent family dog. They form very close bonds with their entire family and enjoy being around children. While they are watchful of strangers they have a generally welcoming attitude unless they sense some sort of threat. In this case the Newfoundland will simply place its large body between its human and the threat instead of barking or showing aggressive behavior.
Health
The average life expectancy of the Newfoundland is around 10 years. There are some health issues for this breed that pet owners should be aware of, the most common of which include hip and Elbow dysplasia, cystinuria, and sub aortic stenosis (SAS)..
