Preventing Gas in Dogs

Our canine companions may suffer from a bout of gas from time to time. However repeated incidences of gas can be an uncomfortable condition for your dog, and these incidences can also create an unpleasant atmosphere that neither you nor your dog will appreciate. Fortunately there are steps that you can take to help prevent bouts of gas if your dog suffers from frequent episodes of flatulence.

Diet is Key to Reducing Gas

One of the main causes of gas in dogs is feeding the wrong type of diet. Not all dogs can eat all kinds of foods. Some people suffer from gas if they eat certain foods and, like people, dogs can experience gas if they do not digest an ingredient in their food well. Try feeding your dog a simpler, easy to digest, diet.

Another cause of gas in dogs is changes in diet. A quick change in foods, or giving the dog new foods that he or she is not accustomed to, can cause serious gas. To help your dog’s body adjust to changes in diet, always introduce new foods slowly. Begin by mixing a very slight amount of new food to the old food. Slowly increase the new food over time and begin eliminating the old food.

Non-Diet Related Remedies

Woofing down food can also lead to bouts of gas in dogs. To help reduce gas that is produced by eating too quickly, feed your dog small but frequent meals. If you have multiple dogs, feed them in separate areas so they don’t feel like they are competing with one another.

For dogs that suffer from extreme gas, no matter what they eat, digestive enzymes may help the situation. These enzymes are sold in tablet or powder form and can be given with the dog’s food.

If your dog continues to suffer from severe gas, a trip to the veterinary is warranted. Gas can be a painful condition for dogs, and your veterinarian may be able to find out why your dog is suffering from gas and what can be done to eliminate the condition.
