Yeast infections in dogs, also known as Malessezia infection, occurs when yeast which naturally live on the dog’s skin reproduces and grows into a large out of control yeast population. Yeast infections may cause severe symptoms and should be treated promptly.
Symptoms of yeast infections in dogs include skin symptoms, body odor, repeated or severe ear infections, hair loss, and behavioral changes in the dog which occur as a result of continual pain and irritation.
Once a yeast infection has occurred in dogs, veterinarian prescribed treatments are the only treatments available which can help to kill the yeast, reduce the symptoms, avoid or treat secondary bacterial infections, and reduce incidences of re-infection. Prescribed treatments for yeast infection includes: oral anti-fungal medications, medicated shampoos, addressing the underlying cause of the infection, and medicated wipes which can treat small isolated flair ups.
