Mange in Dogs: An Overview

Mange is a condition in dogs caused by an infestation of mites which latch onto the dog’s skin and feed off of the dog’s blood. There are three main types of mange mites which can infect dogs: Sarcoptic Mange (Canine Scabies), Cheyletiellosis (Walking Dandruff), and Canine Demodicosis (Demodex).

Symptoms of Mange in Dogs

An infestation of mites named Sarcoptes scabiei, otherwise known as mange, can make a dog utterly miserable. These annoying, and highly contagious, critters can cause intense itching and painful reactions on the skin. If left untreated, secondary bacterial infections may result.

Types of Mange in Dogs

Mange is a parasitic infections caused by tiny little mites, and only certain types of mange are contagious. There are three main types of mange mites which can infect dogs: Sarcoptic Mange (Canine Scabies), Cheyletiellosis (Walking Dandruff), and Canine Demodicosis (Demodex).

Treating Mange in Dogs

The most popular mange treatments are medicated dips, topical treatments, or oral medication. Medicated dips, such as Mitaban or Lymdip, need to be administered two to three times at two week intervals. Topical treatments, such as Revolution, can also kill mange.
