Treating Alopecia in Dogs

Introduction

Treatment options for alopecia in dogs depend on what is causing the condition in the first place. Most cases of alopecia can be successfully treated, once the cause of the condition is diagnosed.

Treating Alopecia in Dogs

As alopecia is usually a symptom of an underlying cause, an accurate diagnosis of the cause of the alopecia is needed before effective treatments can begin. If the alopecia is accompanied by severe symptoms such as itching, hot spots, or lesions, then a veterinarian may prescribe medications to control the symptoms even though the root cause of the alopecia has not yet been determined. These treatments may include: antibiotics, creams, medicated shampoos, and antihistamines.

Parasitic Alopecia

In cases where alopecia is caused by parasites, eliminating the parasites will treat the alopecia over time. Flea and tick control, and shampoos that kill mites, lice, or fungi, will treat any parasitic alopecia. Although it can take weeks to months before the hair grows completely back.

Alopecia Due to Hormonal Imbalance

Alopecia that is caused by a hormonal imbalance is generally treated by bringing the condition that is causing the hormonal imbalance under control. Alopecia that is caused by such hormonal conditions as hyperthyroidism or pituitary dwarfism can be treated through lifelong hormone replacement medications. In some cases, spaying or neutering can help to treat alopecia caused by hormonal imbalances or stress.

Allergic Alopecia

When alopecia is caused by an allergy, there are a variety of treatment options available. Reactions to allergies can be controlled using medicated shampoos, medications such as antihistamines, or through steroid therapies. Locating the cause of the allergy can help to remove the allergen from the dog’s environment in order to stop the reaction.
