Preventing Upper Respiratory Infection in Dogs

Introduction

Upper respiratory infections can be prevented through vaccines and quarantine measures. Strong immune systems that are supported by good nutrition and diet can help to ward off, or less the effects of, upper respiratory infections.

Preventing Upper Respiratory Infections

Vaccination

Respiratory infections that are caused by canine distemper virus and bordetella virus can be prevented through proper vaccination procedures. All puppies and dogs should be vaccinated against canine distemper. Dogs that are boarded or come into contact with other dogs should be vaccinated against bordetella. Dogs that are vaccinated against bordetella may still become infected with some bordetella strains, but the vaccination reduces the severity and longevity of the illness.

Cleaning Measures

Upper respiratory infections can also be prevented by using recommended disinfecting and quarantine measures. Pet shops and shelters need to take measures to prevent the spread of contagious upper respiratory infections. These measures include disinfecting all kennels and food and water bowls, keeping new dogs and puppies quarantined until their health can be assured, and using airway systems that deter the spread of respiratory infections.

Pet owners can help to prevent upper respiratory infection through isolating newly adopted dogs or puppies that are recently adopted for at least a week before they come into contact with other dogs in the household, or by adopting puppies and dogs that have already received bordetella and distemper vaccinations.

Healthy Diet and Lifestyle

Dogs that have strong immune systems can often fight off upper respiratory infections on their own without treatment. A nutritious diet, plenty of exercise, and a happy environment, will help to keep a dog’s immune system strong and healthy. As puppies are particularly susceptible to upper respiratory infections, any puppies that show symptoms of these infections should be quarantined immediately from other puppies and dogs.
