Asthma is one of those conditions which can occur in both humans and their dog companions, and the asthmatic condition that dogs experience is extremely similar to asthmatic conditions in people. This type of condition affects the respiratory system, and on a chronic basis the tissues of the airways become irritated and inflamed as a result of an allergic reaction. In many cases excess mucous is produced, and in severe cases the airways may become constricted.
Once a dog begins to suffer from an asthmatic allergic reaction, symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath occur. Depending on the severity of the reaction, these symptoms may be mild or very severe. Sometimes a dog will become lethargic, stop eating, or lose weight due to the effects of asthma.
There is no test that will conclusively tell veterinarians if a dog has asthma or not. Rather a diagnosis of asthma is concluded upon the dog’s symptoms, a physical examination, and ruling out any other causes that could be causing the symptoms.
Dog owners who have a dog that suffers from asthma can take heart in the fact that there are a number of helpful treatments which are effective for treating asthmatic dogs. In addition to prescription medications, a change in life style may also reduce asthmatic attacks.
