Von Willebrand Disease

Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs: An Overview

Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is the most common inherited blood clotting disorders in dogs. Although it can be found in any breed, Doberman Pinschers, German shepherds, Shetland sheepdogs, and standard poodles are most commonly affected. The condition can be found in males and females alike.

Symptoms of Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs

Von Willebrand disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed bleeding disorders in dogs. This disease is very similar to hemophilia in humans, and like hemophilia Von Willebrand disease causes excessive bleeding symptoms. Some of these symptoms may not always be obvious until the dog undergoes surgery or experiences an injury, and if the disease remains hidden until an injury or surgery occurs then unexpected excessive bleeding could result in death.

Diagnosing Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs

Von Willebrand disease is a genetically inherited condition which can only be diagnosed through blood tests. Due to the fact that this is the most common diagnosed bleeding disorder in dogs, the screening tests for Von Willebrand disease have improved greatly over the past few years.

Treating Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs

Von Willebrand disease interferes with normal blood clotting functions in dogs, and a result excessive bleeding can occur from even light injuries. Von Willebrand disease cannot be cured in dogs, but there are treatments that can help to manage the disease and increase the chances of recovery after an event of excessive bleeding.
