Dog Ear Infections: An Overview

The most common ear infections in dogs involve parasites and climate. Many of the common ear problems in dogs begin as a mild condition, but if these infections are not treated in a timely manner they can quickly escalate into a big problem. If you notice any ear problems in your dog, have your dog’s ears examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Causes of Dog Ear Infections

Ear infections in dogs most commonly develop as a result of parasites, yeast and/or bacteria infections, and skin allergies. If the original cause of the ear infection is not treated in a timely manner, secondary bacterial and skin infections can occur.

Preventing Dog Ear Infections

Ear problems in dogs cause irritation and aggravation for dogs and their pet owners, and dogs themselves often suffer from severe pain due to ear problems. In order to help prevent ear problems in your dog, always keep these words in mind: vigilance, care, and common sense.

Types of Ear Disorders in Dogs

Ear disorders in dogs are caused primarily by two different reasons. Either the ear disorder is a result of a problem within the structure of the ear, or the ear disorder is caused by an outside factor. Some of the most common ear disorders in dogs include: otitis, hematoma, masses within the ear canal, and canine vestibular syndrome.

How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears

It is a good idea to clean your dog’s ears on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This is especially true if you live in a warm or humid environment, or if your dog has long floppy ears that can trap dirt and moisture. To clean your dog’s ears you’ll need just a few tools of the trade and an ear cleaning solution.
