Symptoms of Cherry Eye in Dogs

Introduction

Cherry eye is a condition in which a dog’s third eyelid falls, or slips, out of place. The result is that the eyelid is seen in the corner of the eye. The condition is named ‘cherry eye’ because that is what it looks like, a small cherry in the corner of the dog’s eye. This displacement of the third eyelid looks terrible, but it can be treated through medications and surgery.

Symptoms of Cherry Eye

Often the large red mass of tissue in the corner of the dog’s eye is the only symptom that the pet owner sees. Cherry eye rarely occurs in both eyes at a time; rather the cherry eye just pops out in one eye. The eyelid does not gradually slip out of place, it happens over a short period of time, and pet owners are often shocked to see that their dog which looked fine a few minutes ago now has a large red blob in the corner of the eye.

If cherry eye is not treated, than the dog can develop additional and sometimes serious symptoms. The third eyelid protects and moisturizes the dog’s eye. When it is not in the proper place the eye will become dry and irritated. The result is a red, irritated, eye sometimes accompanied by discharge. The cherry eye can also become inflamed and irritated if it is not restored to its proper position. Sometimes the dog is annoyed by the feeling of the cherry eye and tries rubbing or scratching it; this can result in damage to the eyelid or injury to the cornea.

If you notice that your dog has developed what looks like a cherry eye, make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. This is not a life threatening condition, but it should be treated as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage from occurring to the eye.
