Introduction
The Portuguese Water Dog, also known as the Cao de Aqua, the Portie, and the Water Dog, is a breed of dog in the Working Group. This breed is famous for their prowess and athletic skills in the water, and they are also known for their distinctive webbed feet. The Portie was recognized by the AKC in 1983 and AKC approved in 1991.
The average Portuguese Water Dog stands 17 to 23 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 35 and 60 pounds. Their hair requires regular brushing and grooming cuts, but they shed very little and are considered to be a hypoallergenic dog.
Temperament
Pet owners of this breed need to ensure that their Portie has plenty of opportunities to play in the water. These dogs need tons of exercise and mental stimulation, and their favorite place to burn off energy and to play is in the water.
The Portie is an excellent family pet though they form their closest bond with one person. They get along great with children and other dogs, and if they are socialized properly they can live companionably with cats. This breed is also an excellent alert watch dog due to their supreme hearing abilities, and yet they are also calm and friendly towards strangers.
The Portie needs to be trained and socialized well to allow their naturally companionable and loyal traits to shine. As very intelligent dogs, their lessons need to be short and interesting or they will easily become bored. This breed has an amazing level of physical endurance, and they require daily exercise and room to play and run.
Health
The average life expectancy of the Portuguese Water Dog is between 10 and 14 years. Health risks associated with this breed include hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
History
The exact origin and ancestry of the Portuguese Water Dog has been lost to history, but they have been used for hundreds of years along the coast of Portugal where they were companions and work dogs for fishermen. They also became very popular family pets too.
