Introduction
The Kuvasz, also known as the Hungarian Kuvasz, is a breed of dog in the Working Group. This protective and intelligent breed almost went extinct following World War II, and it is only through a few devoted breeders that the Kuvasz was saved. The Kuvasz was approved by the AKC in 1999.
The average Kuvasz stands 26 to 30 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 70 and 115 pounds (the females are smaller and lighter than the males). Despite naturally repelling dirt, the Kuvasz' thick coat should be brushed on a weekly basis.
Temperament
The Kuvasz is a very independent and fiercely loyal and brave breed of dog. Due to the nature of this breed, it is important to ensure that the breed is socialized well and consistently trained throughout its life. Despite their intelligence, the Kuvasz can be difficult to train because of their independent attitudes. They are very sensitive to their owner’s emotions. Pet owners need plenty of patience when training this breed, and they should only use positive reinforcement training techniques.
The Kuvasz does best as an only dog, and while they are very protective of children they should never be with young children, or with children’s friends, unsupervised. The guarding instinct of the Kuvasz leads them to be cautious and wary towards all strangers, including other children. Intense socialization will help to reduce this tendency.
The Kuvasz is not a high energy dog, but this dog needs plenty of space and daily exercise for long periods of time or it can become bored and destructive. While the Kuvasz is an independent thinker, this dog loves to be with its family as well and should not be left alone for long periods of time.
Health
The average life expectancy of the Kuvasz is between 10 and 12 years. The breed has increased risks for hip dysplasia, allergies, and skin problems.
History
The Kuvasz breed was developed in Hungry hundreds of years ago. While the age and origins of the breed are unknown, it is estimated that the breed was created sometime between the 1200s and 1300s. The Kuvasz were protectors of the Hungarian royalty, and for many years only the royal and noble families were allowed to own this breed. In time, they were used for hunting purposes and eventually made their way onto farms where they were used for guarding livestock.
