Introduction
Komondors have few genetically linked problems and are generally considered to be a hearty and healthy breed. The average life expectancy of the Komondor is between 10 and 12 years.
Common Health Issues
Like most large dogs they are at an increased risk for developing bloat and hip dysplasia. There are also two eye disorders found in the breed: entropion and juvenile cataracts.
External parasites can be a problem due to the heavy coat. As with any long-haired dog, a skin check should be part of a regular grooming routine. Owners should check anti-flea and tick preparations carefully as the Komondor can be extremely sensitive to some of these products.
Ear care should also be routine. Komondors have ears which prevent air circulation, so it is especially necessary to keep them clean and hair free. Commercially available powders and cleansing fluids, as well as regular grooming of the ear hair can greatly reduce infections.
The thick hair that grows between the pads of the feet also requires maintenance. The hair can pick up burrs or become a source of irritation and infection when wet. This hair should be cut out with an electric clipper or scissors to keep mats from forming between the foot pads.
