Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terrier - Overview and History

Introduction

The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Black Terrier, the Chornyi, the Russian Bear Schnauzer, the Russian Black Terrier, the Tchiorny Terrier, or the BRT, is a breed of dog in the Working Group. While the term ‘terrier’ is part of the breed’s name, don’t be fooled: this is a massive and powerful dog with strong protective and guarding instincts. The BRT was given full recognition by the AKC in 2004.

The average Black Russian Terrier stands between 25 and 29 inches at the withers and weighs an average of 80 to 145 pounds (females are slightly smaller than males). They have a very thick and somewhat rough coat, and they do not shed very much. While they do not require a lot of grooming, they should be brushed daily to keep the coat clean and free of mats.

Temperament

The Black Terrier has a personality that is confident and cool. Despite their size, or maybe because of it, these dogs exude an air of self assurance and calm. They are aloof towards strangers, but they form very strong bonds with their human companions. While these dogs sometimes seem reserved, they crave attention from their humans and should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Black Terriers need to work or they will become destructive and difficult to control. These dogs enjoy having a job to do, whether they have an actual job or they are training for competitions, and they must be physically and mentally active for their health and happiness.

Pet owners need to train and socialize these dogs early and well. Their main human also needs to take the dominate role to keep the Black Russian Terrier from trying to establish dominance. Fortunately, these dogs are highly intelligent and they respond to training and socialization lessons very well.

Health

The average life expectancy for the Black Russian Terrier is between 10 – 14 years, and they have relatively few health complaints although they can be prone to hip dysplasia because of their size.

History

The Black Russian Terrier originated in Russia, and it was created in The Red Star Kennel from breeds which include: the Airedale, the Caucasian Ovcharka, the Newfoundland, the Schnauzer, and the Moscow Water Dog. They were initially bred as guard and police dogs, and they can still be seen in Russia today performing these duties.
