The Pomeranian, also known as the Dwarf Spitz, the Loulou, the Pom, and the Zwergspitz, is a breed of dog in the Toy Group. The tiny Pomeranian is prized for their lively and sociable personalities, and unlike many toy dog breeds the Pomeranian has a very independent nature. The Pom was recognized by the AKC in 1888 and AKC approved in 1996.
The Pomeranian is a very small dog breed at an average of 3 to 7 pounds. The head of the Pomeranian is wedge shaped, making it somewhat foxy in appearance. Their ears are small and set high. Its tail is characteristic of the breed and should be turned over the back and carried flat, set high. When born, the tail is not spread out. It may take months for it to grow over the Pomeranian's back, and flatten.
Despite its diminutive stature, the Pomeranian is confident and outgoing. The dog breed is easily adaptable to various environments. They can be a pleasant and loyal companion for up to 15 years. The Pomeranian is a lively, little dog. They are smart and eager to learn early in life. Loyal to their owners, they can also be stubborn, cheeky, cunning and temperamental.
