English Toy Spaniel

English Toy Spaniel - Overview and History

Introduction

The English Toy Spaniel, also known as the King Charles Spaniel, is a breed of dog in the Toy Group. Known by Queen Elizabeth as ‘the Comforter’ this small breed has a stellar personality and a top place among companion dogs. The English Toy Spaniel Breed was recognized by the AKC in 1886 and AKC approved in 1989.

The average English Toy Spaniel stands 10 inches high at the shoulders, and they weigh between 8 and 14 pounds. Their long silky coat need to be brushed on a daily basis, and they should be groomed on a regular schedule. The long floppy ears of the English Toy Spaniel also needs to be cleaned regularly and frequently checked for any signs of infections.

Temperament

The natural personality of the English Toy Spaniel is one of happy, loving, playfulness. They are gentle dogs that do well with families and children of all ages, and while they need daily exercise this is not a high energy breed.

Unfortunately their small size and sweet temperaments naturally causes a tendency for their human companions to baby them, and as a result they can develop unnatural behaviors including aggressiveness, snapping, and anxiety. Pet owners of the English Toy Spaniel need to ensure that their little dog is socialized and trained consistently throughout their life to allow their naturally happy and sweet behaviors to shine.

Health

The average life expectancy for this breed is around 10 to 12 years, but they are at increased risks for certain health conditions which pet owners should be aware of. These conditions include problems such as heart defects, eye problems, patellar luxation, syringomyelia, and fused toes.

History

The history of the English Toy Spaniel is not entirely clear, but there is a strong belief that their ancestors originated in Japan and China. The breed was further developed in England where they became a favorite with royalty, and in time their body size and facial characteristics were changed into the small English Toy Spaniel breed we know today. While they are famous as superior lap dogs and companions, the English Toy Spaniel also excelled as a small hunting dog.
