Introduction
The Chihuahua is a breed from the toy group. This breed has become very famous in the last few years due to their minute statue which makes them the perfect ‘purse dog’ that can be taken anywhere. However, the Chihuahua should not be underestimated just because of its size. This is a highly intelligent and athletic breed which should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Chihuahua was recognized by the AKC in the year 1904 and recently approved in the year 2008.
The average Chihuahua is between 4 and 6 pounds and stands less than a foot tall. Their short coat is very easy to care for and requires little maintenance, but their large ‘radar’ ears should be cleaned regularly.
Temperament
The personality of the Chihuahua is very similar to that of the terrier. They are happy, companionable, alert, and playful. Chihuahuas that are not properly socialized can develop aggressive tendencies towards children and strangers, but they do socialize and train well.
The Chihuahua should be exercised on a daily basis and it should be given plenty of mental stimulation as well. Training for competitions and learning new tricks will keep these dogs in top shape.
Special consideration should be given to the Chihuahua because of its small size and delicate bone structure. They should not be in homes with small children because they can easily be injured, and older children should be taught how to safely handle and play with the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua should never be unsupervised on high places, and they should not be encouraged to leap off of high furniture.
Health
The Chihuahua is a very long lived breed with an average life expectancy of 15 years or more, but the breed is at a higher risk for a number of health conditions which pet owners should be aware of.
History
The history of the Chihuahua has been lost, but there is mention of dogs similar to the Chihuahua from as far back as the days of the Egyptian Pyramids. There is a reference to the Chihuahua from the King of Spain during the time of Christopher Columbus, and it is possible that the breed’s introduction to Mexico came through Columbus.
