Chihuahua - Overview and History

The Chihuahua is a dog breed from the toy group. This dog breed has become very famous in the last few years due to their minute statue which makes them the perfect ‘purse dog’ that can be taken anywhere. However, the Chihuahua should not be underestimated just because of its size. This is a highly intelligent and athletic breed which should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Chihuahua was recognized by the AKC in the year 1904 and recently approved in the year 2008.

Chihuahua - Physical Characteristics

Breed standards for the Chihuahua do not generally specify height, only a weight and a description of their overall proportions. As a result, a Chihuahua's height varies more than with many other dog breeds. Generally, the height ranges between six and ten inches at the shoulders. However, some dogs grow as tall as 12 to 15 inches.

Chihuahua - Temperament

Chihuahuas are prized for their devotion, ferocity and personality. Their curious nature and small size make them easily adaptable to a variety of environments, including the city and small apartments.

Chihuahua - Health Characteristics

Overfeeding Chihuahuas can be dangerous to its health, shortening its life and leading to diabetes. This dog breed requires expert veterinary attention in areas such as birthing and dental care.
