Overview
The Affenpinscher, also known as the ‘monkey dog’, is a lively little dog that is a member of the pinscher-schnauzer subgroup. They have a unique hair-like coat which can be ruined if it is not properly groomed. They are usually between seven to nine pounds in size.
Temperament
These dogs are extremely intelligent, courageous, energetic, playful, affectionate, curious, and to some degree stubborn. Their bold and inquisitive personality can get them into trouble, and they need to be closely supervised outside of the home.
Because of their energy and intelligence, Affenpinschers require plenty of mental and physical stimulation. They love to play, explore, and are quick to learn new commands. These dogs also need regular walks and/or space to run, or they may develop destructive behavior out of boredom. The Affenpinscher will get along great with other pets and people, but due to its tendency to become possessive over toys this breed does not do well in a home with very young children.
Health
Affenpinschers live on average 11 years, and the breed has relatively few health problems. They may be prone to hip dysplasia, and due to their small size they are at an increased risk for collapsed trachea conditions which can occur due to pressure on the throat from collars and leashes. Supplements which support joint health, and walking the dog on a harness instead of a leash, can help to lower these health risks.
History
Affenpinschers were originally bred in Germany in the 1600’s as ratters to work in kitchens, barns, and store houses to control rodent populations. It was not until the 1700 and 1800’s that miniaturized versions of the breed were welcomed into homes as house pets where they retired their job as ratters and instead became excellent watch dogs and companions. While Affenpinschers are great house pets, their owner needs to be ‘top dog’ or the little Affenpinscher will try to become the head honcho of the home.
