Introduction
The Dandie Dinmont Terrier, also known as the Dandie and the Hindlee Terrier, is a breed of dog in the Terrier group. This interesting breed has a body which looks a lot like a Dachshund, but they have a light colored and wavy long coat along with a characteristic poof of white hair on the top of their head. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier was AKC approved in 1991.
The average Dandie stands about 8 to 10 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 18 and 24 pounds. Their silky hair needs to be brushed on a regular basis, and because of their coat type it is best to have a professional grooming hand strip the coat at least twice a year.
Temperament
The personality of the Dandie is much like most terriers. It is very playful, outgoing, intelligent, loyal, watchful, and does well with families and children of all ages. Despite its short stature the Dandie is a very brave little fellow and the breed makes an excellent watch dog. The Dandie bravery though can sometimes develop into aggression towards strangers or strange dogs, and pet owners should ensure that their Dandie is trained and socialized well to prevent any aggressiveness from developing.
Dandies also have very strong and willful personalities, and pet owners need to establish themselves as the alpha dog in the household or the little Dandie will try to a dominant role in the home. The Dandie is not a high energy dog, but this breed enjoys regular physical activity and mental stimulation to prevent boredom. The Dandie is also a very quick and agile dog, and they love a physical challenge.
Health
Dandies have a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years and the breed has few health problems. Dandies that are not exercised on a regular basis can develop back problems especially if they become overweight.
History
The Dandie Dinmont Terrier breed originated in a region between England and Scotland, and evidence of the breed was first recorded in the early 1700’s. The breed was developed to hunt otter and badger, and their distant ancestors include native terrier species from the area in which the breed was created.
