The Bull Terrier, also known as the English Bull Terrier, is a breed of dog in the Terrier Group. Unlike many terriers, the Bull Terrier will not bark unless it truly feels like there is a need to vocalize an alert. The Bull Terrier breed was approved by the AKC in the year 1974.
There is no designated height or weight for the dog breed, however on average Bull Terriers stand 20 to 24 inches tall and weigh 35 to 80 pounds. Bull Terriers are thick-set and muscular with a short, dense coat.
Bull Terriers are known as friendly, outgoing dogs and for even having a clownish attitude about them. Their physical strength is matched by their intelligence, and both their body and mind need to be kept active. They can be fun and playful. As a dog breed they are generally placid and will not normally make the first move.
The Bull Terrier's average lifespan is somewhere between 10 and 14 years, although they can live longer. All bull terrier puppies should be checked for deafness, as this sometimes occurs and is difficult to notice, especially in a relatively young puppy.
