The Border Terrier is a dog breed in the Terrier Group, and they were recognized by the AKC in 1930 and AKC approved in 1950. They are well known for their scruffy face and beard, and their friendly and welcoming personality. One of their most unique characteristics is their coat which resistant to weather of all types, wiry to the touch, soft on the undercoat, and which even repels dirt.
Narrow-bodied and well-proportioned, male Border Terriers stand 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder and weigh 13 to 16 lbs, while females stand 11 to 14 inches and weigh between 11 and 14 lbs. Identifiable by their otter-shaped head, Border Terriers have a broad skull and short, strong muzzle with a scissors bite.
Border Terriers are affectionate, intelligent, even-tempered, and obedient. They are alert and fearless. Generally, they get along well with other dogs, but if they dislike another dog, they do not hesitate to start a fight. Border Terriers will get along well with cats they have been raised with, but will chase other cats and small animals such as mice, rabbits, rats and guinea pigs.
