Introduction
The Airedale Terrier, also known as the Waterside Terrier and the King of Terriers, is one of the largest terrier breeds. This terrier is known for its super size (reaching on average 2 feet in height and weighing on average between 50 and 70 pounds) and its extremely quick wit, intelligence, thick wiry coat, and beautiful dark button eyes.
Temperament
The Airedale’s personality is inquisitive, playful, and willful. These dogs can be a challenge as they are so smart they will easily become bored if they do not have consistent exercise and mental stimulation. They will learn new commands very quickly. Airedale’s require consistent training and socialization or they may become quite a handful.
Airedales are known for being a dog that can do just about anything. These dogs also make excellent watch dogs, and they are very protective of their families. However, due to the fact that they do have a hunting instinct, if they are not properly trained they can harass smaller dogs and cats.
Health
The Airedale has an average lifespan of 11.5 years, and they can be prone to hip dysplasia and skin conditions. Joint health supplements, proper grooming, and parasite control can help to reduce these conditions.
Unlike most terriers, Airedale’s can suffer from a condition called gastric torsion, also known as bloat. Airedales require regular veterinary check-ups too because they can develop severe health conditions without showing any signs of pain or illness.
History
Airedale Terriers were originally bred to hunt otters in the Aire region of England. Their intelligence, quick wit, agility, and high energy led them to quickly become a dog that could fulfill many roles and jobs. The breed was recognized by the AKC in the year 1888 and AKC approved in the year 1959.
In their history they have been working dogs, messenger dogs, guard dogs, hunting dogs, police dogs, and they are superb family dogs and companions. Airedale’s have even been White House pets as companions to presidents Calvin Coolidge, Warren Harden, and Woodrow Wilson.
