Sussex Spaniel - Overview and History

Introduction

The Sussex Spaniel, also known as the Sussex, is a breed of dog in the Sporting Group. The Sussex Spaniel is a companionable house pet, a valued hunting dog, and their breed standards have been well preserved for hundreds of years. The Sussex Spaniel was recognized by the AKC in 1884 and AKC approved in 1992.

The average Sussex stands 13 to 15 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 35 and 45 pounds. Their coat should be brushed frequently to prevent tangles and matting, and their floppy ears need to be cleaned regularly and frequently checked for any signs of infection.

Temperament

The Sussex is a calm, gentle, sensitive, and companionable pet that plays well with children and other animals including cats. They are a very sociable breed, but due to their friendly personality they do not make could watch or guard dogs. The Sussex is a very low energy breed, but they still require daily exercise to prevent weight gain. This breed loves to be with its favorite person or family, and the Sussex should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Pet owners of the Sussex should ensure that their pet is socialized and consistently trained using positive reinforcement techniques. The intelligent Sussex learns commands quickly, but pet owners need to be particularly gentle when training this breed as they have very sensitive personalities. The Sussex does have a tendency to bark and howl a lot, but training can help to reduce these tendencies.

Health

The average life expectancy of the Sussex is between 12 and 15 years. Increased health risks associated with the breed include heart murmurs, back problems, and ear infections.

History

The Sussex was developed in Sussex England for the purposes of hunting. Their low body physic was created to move easily and quietly through the brush, and they have a very talented nose used to located game. The Sussex was developed in the 1800’s using crosses between hunting and spaniel dogs.
