Appearance

The Sussex Spaniel is a muscular, golden-liver colored dog with a thick wavy or flat coat. The broad head is slightly heavy. The muzzle is long and wide with an indentation in the middle and a full stop. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. Sussex Spaniels sport loose skin and long, heavy ears that are covered in thick, soft, wavy hair. The hazel eyes are large and expressive and the nose is brown. The ears are pendant, long, and covered in hair. The neck is short and arched, the topline is level The low-set tail is customarily docked 5-7 inches.

Size and Weight

The Sussex Spaniel typically stands from 13 to 15 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 35 and 45 pounds. They are rectangular in proportion and are longer than they are tall.

Coat and Color

The coat of the Sussex Spaniel is abundant and may be straight or slightly wavy. There is feathering on the tail and legs. The ears are covered in thick, soft, wavy hair and the neck sports a frill. They come in solid golden liver and should have no other shading or markings on the body.

Grooming Needs

Sussex Spaniels are moderate shedders and daily brushing will keep loose hair under control and keep the coat healthy. They only require trimming around the feet. Bathe a Sussex as needed, which will vary depending upon the individual dog's activity level.

Check the ears on a weekly basis for signs of infection, irritation, or wax build up. This is especially important because the long, heavy ears of the Sussex do not allow proper air circulation, leaving them prone to infections. Cleanse regularly with a veterinarian-approved cleanser and cotton ball. Brush the teeth at least once per week to prevent tartar buildup and fight gum disease. Additionally, nails should be trimmed once per month if the dog does not wear the toenails down naturally.
