Introduction
The Golden Retriever, one of the most popular family dogs of the last 100 years, is a breed in the Sporting Group. Known for their friendly, loyal, loving, and outgoing personality, the Golden Retriever is the perfect dog breed for families. The Golden Retriever was recognized by the AKC in 1925 and AKC approved in 1981.
The average Golden Retriever stands 22 to 24 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 55 and 75 pounds (the females are usually lighter and smaller than the males). Their beautiful silky and feathery coat should be brushed daily, and they need occasional bathing. Their floppy ears should be cleaned regularly as well.
Temperament
The personality of the Golden Retriever is one of its greatest assets as a breed. Instead of bonding very closely with just one primary caretaker, the Golden Retriever will from close bonds with all members of a family. This breed also has a very welcoming and friendly attitude towards other people and pets
Golden Retrievers are a good breed for families with children of all ages because of their naturally gentle personality. The Golden Retriever is also a popular therapy and guide breed for the handicapped and elderly.
The Golden Retriever is not a high energy breed, but they are playful and they do require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom. These dogs should not be left alone for long periods of time, and they should be socialized and trained to prevent any shy or timid behaviors from occurring.
Health
The average life expectancy for the Golden Retriever is between 10 and 12 years, and there are increased health risks associated with this breed which pet owners should be aware of. These conditions include obesity, cancer, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases, heart problems, joint diseases, and skin diseases.
History
The Golden Retriever was developed in the 1800’s in Britain. Originally bred as an all around hunting dog using several cross breeds of sporting dogs of that time, the Golden Retriever’s grace, agility, and sweet temperament contributed to the breed’s rapid rise in popularity as a competition dog and house pet.
