German Wirehaired Pointer Dog Breed

German Wirehaired Pointer - Overview and History

Introduction

The German Wirehaired Pointer, also known as the GWP and the Vorstehhund, is a breed of dog in the Sporting Group. This very affectionate and loyal breed is distinguished from other pointers by its wiry, weather resistant, coat. The German Wirehaired Pointer was recognized by the AKC in 1959 and AKC approved in 2006.

The average German Wirehaired Pointer stands 22 to 26 inches at the shoulders and weighs between 60 and 70 pounds. The coat of the German Wirehaired Pointer should be brushed at least twice a week and the coat should be hand stripped on an occasional basis.

Temperament

The German Wirehaired Pointer excels as a one person working dog. This breed will form very close bonds with its primary caretaker, and as an energetic and intelligent dog the GWP always enjoy having a job to do. The German Wirehaired Pointer is an excellent family and watch dog as well, but early socialization and consistent training are a must for this breed especially if it is to be around children.

While the GWP is not an aggressive, shy, or timid breed, they do have a natural tendency to be aloof and reserved towards strangers. This is a very high energy breed, and if the GWP is not given the opportunity to exercise and explore it can become depressed, anxious, and destructive.

Health

The average life expectancy of the GWP is between 12 and 14 years, and the main health risks associated with the breed are ear infections, progressive eye disorders, hip dysplasia, and skin cancer.

History

The German Wirehaired Pointer was developed in Germany in the mid 1800’s as an all around hunting dog. The breed was created using a cross between various pointer breeds, foxhounds, and the poodle. The most important trait of this new breed was its weather resistant and somewhat water resistant coat to allow the breed to hunt in conditions and terrains of all types.
