German Shorthaired Pointer - Overview and History

Introduction

The German Shorthaired Pointer, also known as the DK, Deutsch Kurzhaar, and the GSP, is a breed of dog in the Sporting Group. This energetic and intelligent breed enjoys having a job to do, but they also thrive as human companions and family dogs. The German Shorthaired Pointer was recognized by the AKC in 1930 and AKC approved in 1992.

The average GSP stands 23 to 25 inches high at the shoulder and weighs between 55 and 70 pounds. Their short coat is extremely easy to care for, but their floppy ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and frequently checked for any signs of infection.

Temperament

As a breed, the German Shorthaired Pointer was designed to work alongside a human companion. This type of dog has a strong willing to please attitude, and as a result they enjoy learning new commands and working with their human family.

An alert dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer is an excellent watchdog and they can be particularly watchful over younger children in addition to the rest of their family. However, as an energetic and playful breed the GSP should be supervised around young children to avoid accidental injuries.

Pet owners of this breed need to be aware of the breed’s very high energy and high intelligence traits. These dogs need to be rigorously exercised on a daily basis, and they need continual mental stimulation to alleviate boredom. The GSP also has a strong hunting instinct, and pet owners need to ensure that their dogs knows that cats, birds, and other animals are not acceptable prey.

Early socialization, plenty of exercise, and consistent training are a must for this breed. Without proper training and exercise, the German Shorthaired Pointer can become destructive, hyper, nervous, and possibly aggressive.

Health

The average life expectancy for the GSP is between 12 and 14 years, and the breed is susceptible to some health conditions which pet owners should be aware of.

History

The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany using a cross between the German Bird Dog and other German hunting dogs sometime in the late 1880’s. The breed was created for the purposes as a hunting dog and human companion.
