Size
The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog. They are one of several breeds of spaniels that can serve as gun dogs. The Field Spaniel is 17 to 18 inches tall at the withers, and is somewhat longer than taller for a ratio of 7:8. The United Kingdom Kennel Club's breed standard states Field Spaniels should weigh 40 to 55 pounds.
Coat and Color
The Field Spaniel's long, silky coat comes in solid colors of liver and black. Tan points are allowed as is roan, a blend of both dark and white hairs without large patches of either color.
Grooming the Field Spaniel
The Field Spaniel, as with most spaniels, requires some grooming to keep a neat appearance and to prevent ear infections. Normally the head, face, ears, throat and feet are trimmed. Ear trimming is important in all spaniel breeds as the long ears prevent air circulation in the ear canal causing excessive moisture and infection. Due to their webbed feet, excessive hair around their paws can lead to infection as well.
Fields that are shown have more extensive grooming. Field Spaniels for show may have the feathering on their legs and undercarriage trimmed. Nails should never be allowed to grow too long. An active Field Spaniel will naturally wear down their nails, but carpeting can sometimes help prevent this.
