The English Pointer, also known as the Pointer, is a breed of dog in the Sporting Group. Unlike many sport dogs, this dog breed is happy to just hang out with members of the family and as such they make excellent house pets. The English Pointer was recognized by the AKC in 1884 and AKC approved in 1975.
The English Pointer should be athletic and graceful. They are compact, hard-driving hunting dogs, that are alert and ready to go. The Pointer's primary distinguishing features are their head, feet and tail. Hound or terrier characteristics are undesirable for show purposes.
English Pointers are even tempered, congenial dogs that are happy living indoors as part of a family. They are affectionate and loyal, with a very low to nonexistent aggression level and personality that allows them to happily coexist with other dogs and often cats.
