American Water Spaniel - Overview and History

Introduction

The American Water Spaniel, also known as an AWS, is a medium sized dog from the Sporting group. This was the first breed that was developed in the U.S. as a hunting dog. The breed is not well known outside of the U.S. It was recognized by the AKC in 1940, and accepted by the AKC in 1990.

The average height of the AWS is 15 to 18 inches, and their average weight is between 25 – 45 pounds (the females are usually a little smaller than the males).

Temperament

The AWS is very friendly, energetic, independent, sensitive, watchful, and it will bond closely with its owner. Always looking to please, the AWS may also become too protective of a human companion. These dogs need early socialization and training throughout their lives, or they can develop behavioral problems. Due to its sensitive nature, the American Water Spaniel requires training that is firm but focused on positive reinforcement.

The American Water Spaniel is a high energy dog. While they can fit nicely into smaller homes and apartments, they need regular exercise.

Health

The lifespan of an AWS is between 12 – 15 years, and they do have a higher risk for developing some health conditions. They have a medium length curly coat which requires regular grooming. They do well in both cold and in warm climates.

History

The history of the American Water Spaniel is somewhat vague, but they were created sometime in the late 1880’s. They were bred as hunting dogs that would be capable of flushing and retrieving game in all types of land areas including water. While their original ancestors are unknown, it is believed that they may have come from a cross between the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly-Coated Retriever.
