Appearance
The Tibetan Spaniel is a tiny dog that can be confused with a Pekingese, except for the slightly longer face. The head is rounded at the top and the muzzle is blunt. The teeth should meet in a slight underbite. The dark brown eyes are oval in shape, alert and expressive. The ears are pendant and fathered in silk hair. The tail is nicely plumed and curls over the back. hey have a mane around the neck that is referred to as a shawl. Any color or pattern is acceptable for a Tibetan Spaniel's coat.
Size and Weight
Adult Tibetan Spaniels typically stand about 10 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 9-15 pounds. There are not separate standards based on gender. They are slightly longer than they are tall.
Coat and Color
Tibetan Spaniel wears a silky double coat that is long at the ears, tail, back of the forelegs and buttocks and smooth on the face and front of the legs. The rest of the body sports moderately long hair. They have a mane around the neck that is referred to as a shawl. Any color or pattern is acceptable for a Tibetan Spaniel's coat.
Grooming Needs
Tibetan Spaniels shed lightly year round, and brushing two to three times per week will keep loose hair under control and keep the coat free from tangles or mats. They typically require a bath every six to eight weeks.
Check the Tibetan Spaniel's ears on a weekly basis for signs of infection, irritation, or wax build up. Cleanse regularly with a veterinarian-approved cleanser and cotton ball. Brush the teeth at least once per week to prevent tartar buildup and fight gum disease. Additionally, nails should be trimmed once per month if the dog does not wear the toenails down naturally.
