The Lowchen, also known as the Little Lion Dog and the Petit Chien Lion, is a breed of dog in the Non Sporting Group. This playful and sweet tempered dog breed is a perfect family pet for those living in large homes or small apartments, and they play well with children of all ages. The Lowchen was AKC approved in 1995.
The Lowchen is, depending on the source, a terrier or bichon type dog with a long, slightly harsh coat, that is presented in a lion cut for conformation show purposes. This means that the haunches, back legs, front legs and the one third of the tail closest to the body, are shaved and the rest of the coat is left natural to give the appearance of a lion like form. A small dog, they are considered by some registries as toy dogs and have been long time companions in royal courts.
