French Bulldog - Overview and History

Introduction

The French Bulldog, also known as the Bouledogue Français, and the Frenchie, is a small breed of dog in the Non-Sporting Group. The French Bulldog is known by its bat like ears and miniaturized Bull Dog appearance in addition to a sweet and clown-like personality. The French Bulldog was recognized by the AKC in 1898 and AKC approved in 1991.

The average Frenchie is about 12 inches high at the shoulder and weighs between 20 and 28 pounds. Their short hair is extremely easy to care for, but their open bat like ears should be cleaned regularly.

Temperament

The French Bulldog is the perfect companion, and this breed will bond very closely with one person. While they are good family dogs too, the Frenchie usually forms the strongest bond with its primarily caretaker. The French Bulldog is a very alert and playful dog, but it is not overly excitable or energetic. These are perfect dogs for apartment living, and while they require regular exercise to stay fit they are perfectly happy to spend the day inside with their human companion.

Like many little dogs, the Frenchie is prone to small dog syndrome. This syndrome occurs when small dogs are spoiled and catered to, and as a result the small dog thinks it’s the alpha dog in the home. To maintain the alpha position, the little dog will become aggressive, snappy, stubborn, and anxious. Consistent, firm, training and early socialization will let the Frenchie’s naturally playful and happy personality bloom.

As companion dogs, Frenchie’s thrive on attention and they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Pet owners need to be mindful of the Frenchie’s small size and ensure that the Frenchie cannot wriggle out of the home or yard through small spaces.

Health

The average life expectancy of the French Bulldog is between 10 and 12 years, and there are increased health risks associated with the breed which pet owners should be aware.

History

The French Bulldog was bred as a ratter, human companion, and watchdog. Their not so distant ancestors include the English Bulldog, and they were most likely developed from toy versions of this breed. French Bulldogs originated in England in the 1800’s. They gained their French name when lace makers from England moved to France taking their little companions with them, and in France the tiny Bulldogs quickly became very popular.
