The Dalmatian is a dog breed in the Non-Sporting Group. The Dalmatian is the only breed of dog that is specifically spotted. The average Dalmatian is approximately 19 to 23 inches at the shoulders and weighs between 55 and 70 pounds. Their short coat is easy to care for, and regular brushing can help to control shedding.
The Dalmatian is a well muscled, mid sized dog breed with excellent endurance. Known for its elegance, they have a body type similar to the Pointer. Dalmatian puppies are born with white fur and develop their spots at two to three weeks of age.
As a result of their history as coach dogs, Dalmatians are very active and need plenty of exercise. They are very fast runners, with a great deal of stamina and self reliance. Given freedom to roam, Dalmatians will take multi day trips on their own. In today's urban environment, they will not likely survive such excursions and must be contained.
