Chow Chow - Overview and History

Introduction

The Chow Chow, also known as the Chow, is a breed of dog in the Non-Working Group. This is one of the oldest breeds of dogs known, and it is one of the only breeds (other than the Chinese Shar-Pei) that has a blue-black colored tongue. The Chow Chow's popularly recognized appearance is best described by its Chinese name “Songshi Quan” which means “puffy-lion dog.” The Chow Chow was recognized by the AKC in 1903 and AKC approved in 2005.

The average Chow Chow stands 18 to 22 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 45 and 70 pounds. Chow Chows requires daily brushing and grooming to keep their exceptionally thick coat clean and healthy.

Temperament

The Chow Chow has an extremely independent nature which is often associated with an aloof personality. Chow Chows will bond closely with their primary owner, and they are extremely watchful towards strangers. Most strangers that meet a Chow Chow would do well to just let the Chow Chow be, as they do not like to be petted and handled by people they are not familiar with. Chow Chows are also very territorial, and they will not share their home with a Chow Chow of the same sex.

The Chow Chow is not a high energy dog, but they do require daily walks to prevent boredom and excess weight gain. Chow Chows should be socialized and well trained at an early age to prevent any aggressive or overly protective behaviors. They learn well using positive reinforcement techniques and clicker training, but pet owners need to train with patience and consistency for a well behaved Chow Chow.

Health

Chow Chows have a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years, and they are at increased risks for breed associated health conditions which owners should be aware of. These conditions include hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, thyroid disease, and ocular disorders such as entropion and ectropion.

History

The Chow Chow breed is believed to be over 2000 years old. The breed originated in the area that is now known as China, and they were bred as all around working dogs for hunting, guarding, and farm work.
