The Chow Chow, also known as the Chow, is a breed of dog in the Non-Working Group. This is one of the oldest dog breeds known, and it is one of the only breeds that has a blue black colored tongue. The Chow Chow's popularly recognized appearance is best described by its Chinese name “Songshi Quan” which means “puffy-lion dog.” The average Chow Chow stands 18 to 22 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 45 and 70 pounds.
The Chow is a sturdily built dog that is square in profile with a broad skull. They have small triangular ears that are rounded at the tip. Chows are distinguished by their unusual blue black, purple tongue and very straight hind legs, which gives them a stilted gait.
The Chow Chow is most commonly kept as a companion dog. Chows are extremely loyal to their own family and will bond tightly to their masters. Though their keen sense of proprietorship over their homes, paired with a sometimes serious approach to strangers, can be off putting to those unfamiliar with the breed.
