The Whippet, also known as the Snapdog, is a dog breed in the Hound Group. As the fastest breed of dog in their size class, the Whippet can reach speeds up to 35 mph, and yet this breed is a dedicated couch potato in the home. The Whippet was recognized by the AKC in 1888 and AKC approved in 2007.
Whippets are generally quiet and gentle dogs, content to spend much of the day sleeping. Whippets are not generally aggressive towards other animals, and although especially attached to their owners, they are friendly to visitors. They are not prone to snapping, so they are good with young children. Because of their friendly nature Whippets have often been known to be used in elderly care facilities.
