Rhodesian Ridgeback - Overview and History

The Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Hound, the Lion Dog, and the Ridgeback, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. This Ridgeback is instantly recognizable by the unique ridge of hair that grows forward in a line up their back, in addition to their distinct features and athletic muscular build. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was recognized by the AKC in 1955 and AKC approved in 1992.

Rhodesian Ridgeback - Physical Characteristics

The distinguishing feature of the Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed is the ridge of hair along their back that runs in the opposite direction from the rest of their coat. It consists of a fan-like area formed by two whorls of hair (called "crowns") and tapers from immediately behind the shoulders, down to the level of the hips.

Rhodesian Ridgeback - Temperament

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a dog breed that requires training and dedication, and are typically recommended only for the experienced dog owners. They are strong-willed, intelligent, and many seem to have a penchant for mischief.

Rhodesian Ridgeback - Health Characteristics

The average lifespan for a Rhodesian Ridgeback is 9 to 11 years, but have been known on rare occasion to live up tp 16 years. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are affected by cataracts, cancer, elbow and hip dysplasia. Hypothyroidism is a growing concern, at least in the United States, where it is routinely screened for.
