Pharaoh Hound - Overview and History

The Pharaoh Hound, also known as the Kelb tal-Fenek or the Pharaoh Dog, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. This dog breed has the distinction of being one of the oldest known domesticated dogs in recorded history, and they are immediately recognizable by their very unique features. The Pharaoh Hound was AKC approved in 1983.

Pharaoh Hound - Physical Characteristics

The Pharaoh Hound should appear graceful, elegant, powerful and athletic. They have a strong build without bulkiness or excessive musculature. The dog's head is elegant without being fine or extreme. The skull should resemble a blunt wedge, and is long and chiseled with only a slight stop and a muzzle of good length. The Pharaoh Hound's eyes are oval with a keen, noble, alert, and intelligent expression. The breed has a long, lean and muscular neck that is slightly arched.

Pharaoh Hound - Temperament

The Pharaoh Hound is an intelligent, trainable, playful, and active dog breed. They are sociable with other dogs and with people. However, they can be aloof or reserved with strangers. Pharaoh Hounds are typically very open and affectionate with their family and those that they know.
