Appearance

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, is a small dog with a harsh, wiry, tousled-looking coat. The eyebrows and beard are shaggy, as are the ears. This long, rough hair helps protect the dog while he is hunting in thick brush. The skull is domed and the low set ears are drop and hanging. The long and tapered tail is carried upright. The legs are short and the topline level. PBGVs are white with any combination of markings in lemon, orange, black, sable, grizzle or tricolor.

Size and Weight

Adult PBGVs, regardless of sex, should stand between 13 and 15 inches at the shoulders. In the show ring, dogs who stand above or below this range are disqualified. The body is longer than it is tall, and dogs typically weigh between 30 and 38 pounds.

Coat and Color

The PBGV wears a rough, medium-length double coat that is harsh to the touch and gives the dog a tousled appearance. The undercoat, in contrast is short, thick and soft. The eyebrows are long but stick outward so as to not cover the eyes, they have a beard, a mustache and the ears are covered in long hair. They are white with any combination of markings in lemon, orange, black, sable, grizzle or tricolor.

Grooming Needs

Grooming this breed is a snap, as they only need to be brushed once or twice per week to remove loose hair and keep flyaways under control. They only need to be bathed as needed.

The ears should be checked on a regular basis for signs of wax buildup, irritation or infection. Clean them with a cotton ball and a veterinarian-approved cleanser; never use a cotton swab in a dog's ear canal. Teeth should be brushed on a weekly basis to prevent tartar buildup, promote gum health and keep bad breath at bay. Trim nails monthly if the dog does not wear the toenails down naturally outdoors.
