Norwegian Elkhound Dog Breed

Norwegian Elkhound - Overview and History

The Norwegian Elkhound, also known as the Gray Norwegian Elkhound, the Norwegian Moose Dog, and the Small Grey Elk Dog, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. This ancient breed hunted alongside the Vikings thousands of years ago, and today they excel at almost anything including the role as a valued human companion. The Norwegian Elkhound was recognized by the AKC in 1913 and AKC approved in 1988.

Norwegian Elkhound - Physical Characteristics

The Norwegian Elkhound is a medium sized, hardy dog. They stand about 20 inches high and weigh up to 52 pounds. The Norwegian Elkhound's gray, white, and black coat is made up of two layers. They have an underlying dense, smooth coat ranging from black at the muzzle, ears and tip of its tail, to silvery gray on its legs, tail, and underbody. Norwegian Elkhounds also have an overlying, black-tipped, protective, guard coat along their back.

Norwegian Elkhound - Temperament

Norwegian Elkhounds are bred for hunting large game, such as elk, bear, and moose. The Elkhound has a very strong drive. Although they are strong and hardy, this dog breed typically has an inseparable bond with its masters and is quite loyal. Elkhounds have a sharp, loud bark, making them suitable as guard dogs.
